Environment

Situated at Bramble Island on the Essex coastline exchem additives Great Oakley Works, is a truly unique location. A site steeped in history we have been carrying out chemistry since 1905. Our site a "cordon sanitare" comprises of 450 hectares in total. We have a remarkable location and the environmental considerations though large are matters we address with the utmost care.

Under the Responsible Care Programme (a CIA - Chemical Industries Association initiative and recognised world-wide) exchem additives abides by the principles to:

• Adhere to the best working practices of the chemical industry and comply with all the regulatory requirements. Our company has a programme of continuous improvement as emphasised in its Safety, Health and Environmental policy and objectives. As a signatory to the programme we are open about our Safety, Health and Environmental performances.

• To ensure that we achieve our targets in preventing health and safety accidents, increasing energy efficiency, minimising waste generation and protecting and enhancing the environment, our management systems measure, monitor and review our performance in all these areas.

We use offsite waste disposal companies to handle our process wastes and exchem also has IPC envelope authorisation. A SSSI site, our coast-line even boasts seals, rare barn owls and is home to the Fisher's Estuarine moth.

We won the CIA Award for "Most Improved Site" in 2001 - testament to our performance in achieving our environmental goals. We are also participants of the Site Environmental Action Link (SEAL).

	exchem is a member of the Essex Wildlife Trust and won the English Nature Award in 2001.		exchem is a signatory of the CIA Responsible Care Programme.
